A beehive kit is the single biggest purchase most beginners make, and it’s easy to get wrong. Some “complete” kits are one box with no second brood box. Some come flat-packed in a pile of parts. Others are 8-frame boxes that won’t stack on the 10-frame equipment your mentor uses.
We compared eight starter kits sold on Amazon US on the details that actually matter: frame width, how many boxes are included, materials and finish, assembly, foundation, and what’s missing from the box. We haven’t assembled or used these kits ourselves. The strengths and limitations below come from the listing specs, maker pages, and recurring patterns in owner reviews. All eight are standard Langstroth hives, the type most US extension programs point beginners to. We left out the Flow Hive, which Flow sells mainly direct. See the Flow Hive pros and cons in our separate review. If you’re set on a horizontal hive, our top bar hive guide covers what to look for and two examples. If you’re still deciding on a hive type, see our beehive types comparison first.

The best beehive starter kits
Hoover Hives 10-Frame Kit, 2 Deep + 1 Medium (best overall)
Hoover Hives 10-Frame Beeswax-Coated Kit (2 Deep, 1 Medium, Unassembled)
A full first-season setup: two deep brood boxes and a medium super with 30 frames and heavy wax-coated foundation, in beeswax-dipped wood with dovetail joints. Pre-drilled, with screws included.
Key specifications
- Boxes
- 2 deep + 1 medium (30 frames)
- Frames
- 10-frame
- Material
- Beeswax-dipped wood (fir, per the maker), dovetail joints
- Assembly
- Unassembled, pre-drilled, screws included
- Foundation
- Heavy wax-coated
- Not included
- Feeder, hive stand, protective gear, mite testing kit
Pros
- Two deeps and a super cover the whole first season
- Wax coating means no painting
- Owners often praise the dovetail joints over standard box joints
Cons
- Some owners report joints so tight they need sanding or a mallet
- Pre-drill any nail holes; owners report splitting otherwise
- Brief one-page instructions; assembly can take several hours
This is the kit we’d point most beginners to. Two deep brood boxes and a medium super give a new colony room for its whole first season. You won’t need to place an emergency order for a second box in May. The wood is dipped in beeswax, so there’s no painting, and the boxes use dovetail joints, which owners often single out as stronger and tighter than the box joints on most kits.
The tradeoff is assembly. Owner reviews repeatedly mention joints tight enough to need sanding or a rubber mallet, splitting if you nail without pre-drilling, and a one-page instruction sheet. Newer versions come pre-drilled with screws, which helps. Plan an afternoon per box, and watch an assembly video first.
Skip it if you want to start in 8-frame equipment, or don’t want to assemble anything (see the assembled Mann Lake combo below).
Mann Lake Complete Hive Kit Combo (best assembled)
Mann Lake Complete Hive Kit Combo, 10-Frame (1 Deep, 1 Medium, Fully Assembled)
Mann Lake’s ready-to-use two-box hive, made in the USA from pine: an assembled deep and medium with 20 assembled frames and plastic-coated foundation, a telescoping cover with a notched inner cover, and a screened bottom board.
Key specifications
- Boxes
- 1 deep + 1 medium (20 frames)
- Frames
- 10-frame
- Material
- Pine (sold unpainted or painted)
- Assembly
- Fully assembled, no tools needed
- Foundation
- Plastic-coated (black in brood frames, natural in the super)
- Not included
- Entrance reducer (not listed), second brood box, feeder, protective gear
Pros
- No assembly, so it’s ready the week your bees arrive
- Notched inner cover and screened bottom board included
- From one of the largest US suppliers, so matching boxes are easy to add
Cons
- One deep plus one medium: many colonies need another box by midsummer
- Mann Lake’s listing doesn’t mention an entrance reducer
- The unpainted version needs painting before use
If your bees are arriving soon, or you don’t have the tools or time to build boxes, an assembled kit is worth the extra cost. Mann Lake’s combo arrives fully assembled, with a deep brood box, a medium super, 20 frames with plastic-coated foundation, a telescoping cover with a notched inner cover, and a screened bottom board. It’s made in the USA from pine, and you can order it painted or unpainted.
Two gaps to plan for: Mann Lake’s listing doesn’t mention an entrance reducer, which you’ll want for a new colony, and many colonies outgrow one deep plus one medium by midsummer. Check every box on arrival, since assembled hives are more exposed to shipping damage.
Skip it if you’re on a tight budget and don’t mind assembly. The unassembled Hoover kit gives you three boxes.
BeeCastle 10-Frame Kit, 2 Deep + 1 Medium (best value)
BeeCastle 10-Frame Beeswax-Coated Langstroth Hive (2 Deep, 1 Medium)
A three-box kit with the most accessories on this list: metal-topped cover, inner cover, queen excluder, solid bottom board, entrance reducer, and mouse guard, plus 30 frames with waxed foundation.
Key specifications
- Boxes
- 2 deep + 1 medium (30 frames)
- Frames
- 10-frame
- Material
- Beeswax-coated, FSC-certified wood
- Assembly
- Requires assembly (screws and nails included)
- Foundation
- Beeswax-coated
- Not included
- Feeder, hive stand, protective gear, mite testing kit
Pros
- Includes a mouse guard and queen excluder, which many kits leave out
- Standard box dimensions (deep 16 1/4 × 19 7/8 × 9 5/8 in)
- Owners often say the pre-drilled holes line up well
Cons
- Recurring owner reports of shipping damage and missing hardware, usually replaced by support
- Some owners report an inner cover without a ventilation notch
- Glue and nail the frames; some owners report frames coming apart
BeeCastle’s three-box kit includes more accessories than most: a queen excluder and a mouse guard as well as the usual covers, bottom board, and entrance reducer, with 30 frames of waxed foundation. Owners often say the pre-drilled holes line up and the boxes go together well.
Owner reviews show a consistent set of problems, though. Damaged boxes or missing hardware on arrival come up repeatedly, though buyers generally report BeeCastle replaced parts quickly. Some owners report an inner cover without a ventilation notch, which matters in winter. Others say the frames need gluing as well as nailing. Several buyers also question whether the wood is the cedar the listing describes. Inspect everything on delivery, glue and nail the frames, and be ready to cut a notch in the inner cover.
Skip it if you’d rather pay more for fewer quality-control surprises.
BeeCastle 8-Frame Kit, 2 Deep + 1 Medium (best 8-frame)
BeeCastle 8-Frame Beeswax-Coated Langstroth Hive (2 Deep, 1 Medium)
An 8-frame version of BeeCastle’s three-box kit, with 24 frames and waxed foundation, a metal-topped cover, inner cover, queen excluder, solid bottom board, and entrance reducer.
Key specifications
- Boxes
- 2 deep + 1 medium (24 frames)
- Frames
- 8-frame
- Material
- Beeswax-coated wood
- Assembly
- Requires assembly (screws and nails included)
- Foundation
- Beeswax-coated
- Not included
- Feeder, hive stand, protective gear, mite testing kit
Pros
- Narrower 8-frame boxes are lighter to lift
- A full first-season setup in one order
Cons
- 8-frame boxes don’t stack with 10-frame equipment
- Same owner reports as the 10-frame kit: shipping damage, missing hardware, unnotched inner cover
UGA’s beginner guide recommends 8-frame boxes because they’re lighter to lift. Mississippi State Extension notes a full deep can weigh more than 70 pounds in 10-frame equipment, and an 8-frame box carries two fewer frames. This kit gives you the same three-box layout as BeeCastle’s 10-frame kit in the narrower width, with 24 frames.
Remember that 8-frame and 10-frame boxes don’t stack together. Mississippi State notes that covers, bottom boards, and boxes aren’t interchangeable, though frames are. If your local club and nuc supplier use 10-frame equipment, that’s worth weighing. The same owner-feedback caveats apply as for BeeCastle’s 10-frame kit.
Skip it if you plan to buy nucs or used equipment locally in 10-frame size.
Mann Lake Traditional Complete Hive Kit (best ready-to-use single box)
Mann Lake Traditional Complete Hive Kit, 10-Frame (Assembled, Painted)
Mann Lake’s assembled, painted starter hive, made in the USA: one 9 5/8 in deep body, ten assembled frames with beeswax-coated plastic foundation, telescoping cover, notched inner cover, bottom board, and entrance reducer.
Key specifications
- Boxes
- 1 deep (10 frames)
- Frames
- 10-frame
- Material
- Pine, painted
- Assembly
- Fully assembled
- Foundation
- Beeswax-coated plastic
- Not included
- Second brood box, honey super, feeder, protective gear
Pros
- Assembled and painted, so it’s ready on arrival
- From one of the largest US beekeeping suppliers, so matching parts are easy to add later
- Notched inner cover for ventilation
Cons
- Only one box: plan on a second brood box within the first two months
- Pricier per box than multi-box kits
Mann Lake is one of the largest US beekeeping suppliers. Its traditional kit is a single deep hive body, assembled and painted, with ten assembled frames, beeswax-coated plastic foundation, a telescoping cover, a notched inner cover, a bottom board, and an entrance reducer. It’s ready the day it arrives, and every part matches Mann Lake’s standard boxes, so adding more later is easy.
It’s one box, though. Budget for a second brood box (and a super) within the first couple of months.
Skip it if you want everything for the first season in one order.
Goodland Bee Supply GL1STACK (best budget single box)
Goodland Bee Supply GL1STACK Single 10-Frame Deep Beginner Kit
A flat-packed, unassembled single-deep hive: one deep brood box, ten pine frames with pre-waxed plastic foundation, inner cover, telescoping cover, bottom board, and entrance reducer.
Key specifications
- Boxes
- 1 deep (10 frames)
- Frames
- 10-frame
- Material
- Pine
- Assembly
- Unassembled (flat-packed)
- Foundation
- Pre-waxed plastic
- Not included
- Second brood box, honey super, feeder, protective gear
Pros
- Includes both an inner cover and a telescoping cover
- Flat-packing reduces shipping damage
Cons
- Only one box
- Raw pine needs painting before use
A flat-packed, unassembled single-deep kit with both an inner cover and a telescoping cover, which some budget kits skip. Flat-packing reduces shipping damage, but you’ll be assembling and painting raw pine. Like the Mann Lake kit, it’s one box, so add a second brood box to your budget. We found few detailed owner reviews, so there’s less evidence on long-term durability than for the other kits.
Skip it if you don’t want to assemble and paint.
Little Giant 10-Frame Deluxe Beginner Hive Kit (best with tools and gear)
Little Giant 10-Frame Deluxe Beginner Hive Kit
A pre-assembled single-deep hive bundled with gloves, a veil, a smoker and fuel, a bee brush, a hive tool, a frame feeder, and a copy of Beekeeping For Dummies. Made in the USA.
Key specifications
- Boxes
- 1 deep (10 frames)
- Frames
- 10-frame
- Material
- Wood
- Assembly
- Pre-assembled
- Foundation
- Wax-coated plastic
- Not included
- Second brood box, honey super, full suit or jacket, mite testing kit
Pros
- The most complete one-order start: hive, tools, feeder, veil, gloves, and a book
- US-made woodenware
Cons
- Only one box
- Retailer listings disagree on whether the bottom board is solid or screened
- A veil, not a full suit or jacket
If you want one order that covers the hive and the basics to work it, this is the most complete kit here. It includes a pre-assembled single-deep hive, plus gloves, a veil, a smoker and fuel, a bee brush, a hive tool, a frame feeder, and a copy of Beekeeping For Dummies. The woodenware is US-made, and it’s a standard Langstroth hive.
It’s still one box, and the veil isn’t a jacket or suit, which many beginners prefer. Retailer listings also disagree on whether the bottom board is solid or screened, so check the current listing. Availability varies by seller.
Skip it if you already own protective gear and tools, since you’d be paying for duplicates.
Apimaye Ergo Insulated Hive (best insulated)
Apimaye Ergo Insulated 10-Frame Hive Set (Single Deep)
A double-walled, insulated hive made of food-grade HDPE plastic, with plastic frames and double-waxed foundation. Apimaye rates its insulation at an R-value of about 7, several times that of a wooden box.
Key specifications
- Boxes
- 1 deep
- Frames
- 10-frame (Langstroth-compatible)
- Material
- Insulated HDPE plastic
- Assembly
- Assembled
- Foundation
- Double-waxed (on plastic frames)
- Not included
- Honey super, protective gear, mite testing kit
Pros
- Insulation helps colonies in very cold and very hot climates
- No painting, and rot-proof and termite-proof
- Built-in entrance reducer and mouse guard, according to Apimaye
Cons
- Costs far more than a wooden box
- Some owners still add a quilt box for winter moisture
- Minor fit differences reported when mixing with other brands’ parts
Apimaye hives are double-walled, insulated plastic boxes in Langstroth dimensions. Insulation matters: a 2022 University of Illinois trial found that insulated hive covers reduced how much food colonies used in winter and improved survival. Owners in very cold northern states and in hot desert climates report good results. The plastic doesn’t rot, need painting, or attract wax moth damage, and Apimaye builds in an entrance reducer and mouse guard.
The downsides are price, which is far above a wooden kit, and moisture. Some owners still add a quilt box in winter, and owners in humid climates report keeping a closer eye on condensation. Mixing Apimaye boxes with other brands can produce minor fit differences.
Skip it if you’re in a mild climate, where a wooden hive with a winter wrap does the job for much less.
How we chose
Beehive kit buying guide
Kit or individual parts?
A kit is the easiest way to get matching parts in one order, and it’s usually cheaper than buying each piece separately from the same supplier. Buying parts makes sense if a mentor recommends a specific setup, or you want to mix suppliers. Either way, add up everything you’ll need for the first season, not just the headline kit. Our beekeeping startup cost calculator does that for you, and the cost breakdown shows typical prices.
8-frame vs 10-frame
- 8-frame: narrower and lighter. UGA recommends it for beginners.
- 10-frame: the traditional US standard. It holds more per box and matches most nucs and club equipment.
Pick one and stick with it, since the boxes don’t stack together. Our Langstroth hive guide has the dimensions and full-box weights.
Deep vs medium configurations
Two deeps is the traditional brood setup. Mississippi State Extension notes three mediums hold about the same as two deeps, at a lighter weight per box. Kits with “2 deep + 1 medium” give you a traditional brood nest plus your first honey super.
Wood type and finish
Arkansas Extension advises against treated lumber for hive boxes, and recommends exterior-grade paint unless the wood is naturally weather-resistant. You’ll see three finishes:
- Raw wood (usually pine): the cheapest. Paint the outside surfaces only, and let it dry before the bees move in.
- Painted: ready to use, but you have no say in the paint.
- Beeswax-coated or dipped: no painting, with a natural finish. Owner reports suggest coverage quality varies by brand.
Assembled or unassembled?
Unassembled kits save money but take time: hours per box, with glue, nails or screws, and clamps. Assembled kits are ready on arrival but cost more and are bulkier to ship. If your bees arrive in a few weeks, buy assembled.
Insulated and polystyrene hives
Insulated hives suit cold northern winters and very hot climates. In a mild climate, a standard wooden hive with a winter wrap is usually enough. Our winter beekeeping guide covers wrapping and ventilation.
What else you need besides the kit
Even a good kit leaves gaps. Most beginners also need protective gear, a smoker, a hive tool, a feeder, a mite testing kit, and a hive stand. Our beginner equipment checklist sorts them by when you need them, and our guide to the parts of a beehive explains what each piece in your kit does.
Getting bees for your kit
Kits never include live bees. You’ll order a nuc (a small established colony) or a package (loose bees and a caged queen) separately, usually from a regional supplier, for pickup in spring. Many suppliers sell out by late winter, so order in fall or winter. Our step-by-step guide to starting beekeeping covers timing.
Where to buy beehive kits
- Amazon: convenient, with fast delivery and easy returns, and all eight kits above are listed there. Check the listing’s exact box count and frame width.
- Beekeeping suppliers (Mann Lake, Betterbee, Dadant, and others): full catalogs and matching add-on parts.
- Local suppliers and clubs: often sell assembled hives for pickup, which avoids shipping damage, and can match local nucs.
Common questions
Does a beehive kit come with bees?
No. Beehive kits are equipment only. You order bees separately as a nuc or a package, usually from a regional supplier for spring pickup. Order in fall or winter, since many suppliers sell out by late winter.
What is the easiest beehive for beginners?
A standard Langstroth hive, ideally in 8-frame boxes or all mediums to keep the weight down. It’s the hive most mentors, classes, and nuc suppliers use, so help and parts are easy to find.
How many boxes do I need in year one?
Usually two brood boxes, plus a honey super if the colony grows strong. Many single-box kits need a second brood box within the first couple of months, so budget for it.
Are cheap beehive kits worth it?
Many are fine if they use standard Langstroth dimensions. Common issues with budget kits are shipping damage, missing hardware, and frames that need gluing. Inspect everything on arrival and keep the packaging until you’ve checked the parts.
Is an 8-frame or 10-frame kit better?
An 8-frame kit is lighter to lift and recommended by UGA for beginners. A 10-frame kit is the US standard and matches most nucs and club equipment. Either works. Choose one width and use it for every hive.
